This course is designed to equip you with a broad understanding of the evolving media landscape and how news organisations are responding to the changes in the habits of news audiences.

The course is divided into three sections:

  • Section 1 provides an overview of the course and introduces the course trainer and media experts.
  • Section 2 describes the media platforms and analyses the news consumption habits of the audience.
  • Section 3 demonstrates how news can be customised for different media platforms including mobile, video, online and print.


In each section, you will be presented with a practical exercise based on the concepts discussed in the course. 

You can complete this course within 5 hours across multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will:

  • know about the ever-changing media landscape in all its complexity
  • be able to analyse and react to the media habits of your audience
  • be able to identify the habits of both younger and older members of your audience 
  • be able to customise your stories for different platforms in order to achieve maximum impact

Chris Birkett - Course Instructor

Chris Birkett, your course instructor, is an experienced journalist who has worked for the UK's top news organisations. He was Executive Consultant to the Telegraph Media Group, a senior executive at BBC News, and Executive Editor of Sky News, responsible for television, radio and digital content.

Jon Laurence - Newpress

Jon Laurence is the vice-president of Newpress in New York.  He's a former supervising executive producer at AJ+ where he ran the English news output. At the time of interview for this course he as the deputy editor of Now This, a New York-based media company which creates video news content distributed across social platforms.

Rob Owers - ITV News

Rob Owers, is the senior content editor for ITV news in the UK.  He is also the AI lead for ITV news focusing on how they can use emerging tools to improve productivity and strengthen trust in an era of AI deepfakes. At the time of interview for this course he was director of video and audio at the UK's Telegraph Media Group.

Jonathan Levy - Sky News

Jonathan Levy, is the managing director and executive editor at Sky News. At the time of interview he was the director of Newsgathering and Operations at Sky News.

Magnus Mazimpaka, is the CEO and chief editor of the Rwandan digital news organisation Taarifa, which publishes in English via its website and multiple social media platforms.

To successfully complete the course and get your certificate, you will need to achieve a 60% pass rate for the graded assessment.
