By understanding how to create content that will interest and engage the audience, you will be able to make an informed judgment on prioritising which stories to cover, and how to present them.

This course will teach you how to gain your audience and how to keep them. You will learn how to maintain a strong connection with your audience through attractive and engaging treatments of stories with human interest. You will be placed in realistic UK newsroom situations, so that you are in the position of making those crucial decisions on which stories to cover and how to treat them. This will ensure that your audience is always on the increase.

I have more than 30 years' experience as a senior journalist and manager working for UK and International media organisations, including the BBC, Al Jazeera, ITV and Thomson Reuters. I hold an MA in Mass Communications from the University of Leicester and I’m a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy..

Neil Thompson - ITV News and Current Affairs

Neil Thompson is the commissioning editor for ITV News and Current Affairs (the UK's national commercial channel). He's a former editor of Good Morning Britain (GMB), a breakfast news and magazine programme broadcast Monday to Friday on ITV. Neil started his career as a journalist working in regional and national newspapers before moving into television. 

Owen Masters - Good Morning Britain, ITN

Owen Masters is the senior content editor at Good Morning Britain (GMB). He leads a team of producers, reporters and presenters  making decisions about the content of the news and magazine programme which is broadcast live for two and a half hours every weekday morning. GMB includes the latest national and international news, interviews with leading politicians and public figures, and investigative reporting.

Ben Briscoe - GB News

Ben Briscoe is head of programming at GB news where he oversees the entire programme schedule. He leads the programme teams across 18 hours of output, seven days a week from breakfast through daytime and into primetime. He leads the programme development team creating new show formats. He was previously series editor at TalkTV and assistant editor at ITV News. 

Caroline Sigley - Former  TV editor

Caroline Sigley is the head of external communications at the National Trust . Previously she was the news editor at Good Morning Britain where she led a team of producers, researchers and reporters who investigated stories that may be of interest to the audience. She  also allocated resources, crews and reporters to cover breaking news stories. 

Fred Mwasa - Kitali Today Limited

Fred Mwasa is deputy editor-in-chief at Kigali Today Limited, a news organisation based in the Rwandan capital. It comprises: a radio service, KT Radio; a news website in Rwandan and another in English.  He oversees the news cycles of all the platforms and has a particular interest in business and economics stories. 

To successfully complete the course and get your certificate, you will need to achieve a 60% pass rate for the graded assessment.
